Crocodile documentary ‘Skin Deep’ to be premiering in Melbourne early next year
On February 2nd 2024, Defend the Wild x World Animal Protection Australia are hosting the Skin Deep Premiere & Panel Discussion at Cinema Nova in Carlton, Melbourne between 6-8pm.
The panel discussion will hear from experts making unprecedented strides towards the protection of native crocodiles, discussing the urgent need for compassion in conservation and a just transition towards a wildlife-free future in fashion.
What is Skin Deep about?
'Skin Deep' dives into the experience of Donny Imberlong, a Jaru man living on the traditional lands of the Miriwoong Gajerrong people in Kununurra, while working on a Darwin crocodile farm in 2017. It explores his strong connection with the species, and the inner struggles that came from working in an industry that relies on killing an animal that he loves so deeply for luxury fashion. Ultimately, the film shines a light on the current mindset behind conserving these apex predators and begs the question - can there be a better way?

The panellists for this event include the documentary’s interviewee Donny Imberlong, Alix Livingstone from Defend the Wild, Emma Hakansson from Collective Fashion Justice, and Ben Pearson from World Animal Protection Australia. Complimentary drinks will be provided upon arrival, with the event set to feature a unique touch wall of innovative wildlife-friendly materials.
Crocodile Management Code of Practice review
The federal government has announced a review of the Crocodile Management Code of Practice. The current code was established in 2009, and despite the fact this code states it should be reviewed after 5 years, it is now receiving an independent review 14 years later.
The code review oversees everything from egg collection, capturing wild crocodiles, breeding in captivity, husbandry practices, and how these apex predators are killed.
Public submissions for the new code of practice closes on the day of the premiere event for Skin Deep - February 2nd - so if you’d like to complete the survey or make a submission, make sure you do so prior to this date.
