The Aboriginal Voice for the Dingo
Dingo Culture is a digital advocacy initative run by Jirrbal Rainforest Traditional Owner Sonya Takau, Board Director of Defend the Wild. Through Dingo Culture, Sonya works to elevate the Aboriginal perspective on the Dingo, sharing their cultural significance and importance for First Nations people across the country. Sonya’s work has been vital in raising the national profile of the Dingo as a cultrally signficant animal in need of protection, which has led to the unprecedented advancement of Dingo protection across the country.

In July 2024, Dingo Culture’s Sonya Takau appeared on ABC’s 7.30 program ‘Are dingoes precious native wildlife, or a pest to be controlled?' . Sonya discussed the urgent need for First Nations people to be included in decision-making around the management of Dingoes.

The National Inaugural First Nations Dingo Forum
Dingo Culture’s Sonya Takau presented at the National Inaugural First Nations Dingo Forum on the cultural significance of the Dingo and about her journey to protecting them through advocating their cultural significance to First Nations people.

Dingo Culture’s Sonya Takau is a member of the expert Dingo Advisory Council, which represents a broad spectrum of stakeholders in relation to Dingo management, advising government and landholders of best practice management.

With your help, Sonya Takau will collect and record the Oral histories, important cultural knowledge and stories about the Dingo. Aboriginal people and their Oral histories form bridges between oral traditions and written history. This history is essential to raise the Aboriginal voice to permanently protect the Dingo.
